Choose the best knife guard: blade covers, sleeves & protectors

Blade guards, also known as knife sleeves or knife protector, are a must-have if you want to store your kitchen knives in a drawer without using a drawer insert. They prevent your knives from becoming blunt. When your knives come into contact with each other, burrs can form on the edges. Your knives can also damage your other utensils if you store them in a drawer without protection. Furthermore, knife guards ensure that you won't cut yourself when taking the knife out of the drawer.

How to choose the best knife guard?

There are different kinds of knife guards available, made from different materials and in different sizes. The most important thing is that you'll choose a knife guard that suits your preferences and fits your knives. It can be useful to measure your knives and check the length of the knife guard before ordering. Choose a knife guard that suits your needs: some knife guards are better suited for transport, while others are meant to protect your knife in the kitchen drawer. Most blade guards are easy to clean. Simply wipe it down with a wet piece of cloth, and make sure it's completely dry before storing your knives again. Some can even go in the washer!

Different types of knife guards

Blade guards are available in different sizes, so you can have a suitable blade guard for each knife. In our range you'll find knife guards from renowned brands like Eden, Zwilling and Messermeister.

Magnetic blade guards or sheaths?

In the Knivesandtools range you'll find two types of knife guards: magnetic guards, and guards with a fixed slot. A magnetic blade guard is made from magnetic material. It tightly clamps around the knife to make sure the knife never accidentally slips out of the guard. Most magnetic blade guards have a folding hinge to open and close them. For a blade guard with a fixed slot, you simply slide the blade in through the opening. Most fixed slot blade guards are made from nylon, plastic or leather. These also close tightly around the blade; they don't take up much space and they keep your knives safe. For extra safety, you can combine sheaths with a knife bag! It prevents damage to your knives, your knife bag and your fingers.

Saya: Japanese knife guards made from wood

Are you looking for a knife guard for your sushi knife or sashimi knife? Consider the 'Saya'! Sayas are knife guards made from hard types of wood, like magnolia or kiri (or Paulownia). They are often lightweight and have a soft texture. Each Saya was designed for one specific knife. As a result, the knife guard is the perfect fit for the knife in question. You can even carry the knife with you on your belt thanks to the so-called 'lanyard eye'.

Sayas are handmade and are often decorated with traditional Japanese designs. Sayas are easy to use. Simply slide the knife into the Saya and you're good to go!

It's important to regularly maintain your Saya to prevent mould. Always make sure the knife guard is completely dry before sliding your knives inside.

Sayas are an important part of traditional Japanese knife care and are used to protect precious knives.
