Pocket knife, folding knife or pen knife

The main difference between the terms pocket knife, folding knife or pen knife are not always clear. These terms all refer to foldable knives. Knives that are called folding knives generally have a fancy feel to them, and pen knives are usually on the smaller side. To make a clearer distinction, Knivesandtools works with a different classification. We distinguish between gentleman's knives, EDC knives, Swiss pocket knives, hunting knives, children's pocket knives, tactical pocket knives and multi-tools. What they all have in common is that they're foldable pocket knives. As such, you can comfortably carry them with you in your pocket.

Gentleman's knife

Gentleman's knives are beautiful, classic knives. For example, gentleman's knives from Fontenill Pataud are sleek and elegant. EDC knives are functional knives that are great to take with you on a daily basis. Swiss army knives are Victorinox's famous Swiss pocket knives. They have life-long warranty and are very practical in all sorts of situations. Hunting pocket knives are sharp and reliable, and popular brands include Buck and Gerber. Tactical pocket knives are versatile and rock-solid knives from, among others, Extrema Ratio, Zero Tolerance and SOG. These are extraordinary pocket knives for professional use. They are incredibly sharp and very popular.

A knife is also great to have when you're out camping or when you're at the Scouts. This could be a reliable survival knife, but a Swiss army knife would also be perfect.

Pocket knives with wooden handles

Wooden handles are very stylish, and since wood is a natural material, each knife will have unique markings. Pocket knives with handles made from horn also have that classic feel to them.

Carbon steel and damascus pocket knives

Nowadays, all kinds of high-tech modern steels are readily available. Böhler M390 steel is currently the most popular steel on the market. You often see this type of steel in combination with titanium handles. Very modern! Classic types of steel have not gone out of fashion, however. For example, carbon steel and damascus steel are still popular choices for pocket knives.

Pocket knife with flipper: opening your blade with one hand

You will also find pocket knives that you can easily open with a flipper. Super practical when you only have one hand free during chores. We also sell 'Spring Assisted Knives'. These open with the assistance of a spring, without being a 'real' spring knife. Of course, it is also nice if your pocket knife stays open while you're using it. That is why pocket knives with locks are very popular, for example: liner locks or back locks.

Multi-tool pocket knife for DIY

When you're working in your shed, you'll need some tools, of course. Tools are an essential part of DIY, of course! That's why a multi-tool pocket knife is the perfect choice when you love to tinker. Knife laws in Ireland

In Ireland the law states that you are guilty of an offence is you carry 'In a public place, any knife or other article which has a blade or is sharply pointed'. This includes a simple Opinel knife or a Leatherman that contains a blade. But also a broken bottle or pair of scissors.

If, however, you have a good reason for carrying a knife in public you are legally allowed to do so. Examples of good reasons for carrying a knife are if you use it for work (if you are, for instance, a carpenter), as part of a national costume or for recreational purposes. In this case EDC is not a valid reason for carrying a knife in public. Please consult the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act 1990 for more information.
