An all time classic! I love this knife but it won’t be for everyone. It suffers from being a very heavy knive with materials of a bygone age. More modern knives have evolved to be lighter, adjustable and generally will wear a better steel. Even with the improvements to the more modern knives I still love this knife. For one thing the steel which is fairly dated benefits from a superb heat treat which means you are able to make it insanely sharp with very little work. I find many of the new, all singing all dancing steels which are heralded to be able to take a super fine edge a complete nightmare to sharpen and yes you can get them to this edge but I find I can’t get them to take an edge with an element of toothyness which makes for a great usable edge. This is completely the opposite. This steel may not hold an edge as long as say s30v but it takes seconds to get it sharp. This blade also benefits from a superb hollow grind which when paired with its superb edge makes an incredible sliver. The weight is very much in your hand offering superb blade control. It’s very much geared towards carry in a belt pouch due to its weight and if done so it’s superb. It’s not a pocket knife really. The other reason it’s benefits from this method of carry is due to the fact that it cannot be stripped to de fluff and dirt the innards. The handle materials look high quality and the heft makes you have confidence it could handle anything you would realistically expect a folder to do. I had the smaller version but the ranger, but I found the weight to proportions did not work, it felt too small in length when you held it. Now mine came very sharp but the finish is not perfect. There is a slight gap along the where the liner meets the back lock and it was full of black stuff which I believe to be from the buffer when they finish the knife. I’ve since oiled it and worked it in and now it does open and close easily. The lock up is perfection. No movement in any direction. So essentially if you can get over there being better size to weight ratio knives out there and you don’t mind the slightly old fashioned construction and materials then you are likely to love this knife. The one thing I guarantee you will not be disappointed with is it’s cutting performance and it’s ease of sharpening to unbelievably sharp. Value wise I think you get a lot of product for the money along with a piece of real knife history. Buck should really consider doing an up to date version with a handle construction similar to that of maybe the spyderco police g10 but keep everything else the same, the blade steel, profile , lock just make a lighter version. I know they did the buck lite but that just looked and felt like a budget version. Mix it up a bit buck ! Thanks to knives and tools for the usual service.
